1 John 1:5-10

Last week we saw that God provides a way of escape when we face temptation.  But what if we don’t choose to escape the temptation, but we choose to commit the sin?  What does God’s grace look like then?

Let’s consider the text: 1 John 1:5-10

I.    Because of God’s grace – God is faithful (v. 9)

II.   Because of God’s grace – God is forgiving (v. 9)

Confession is agreeing with God about our guilt, but not giving excuses Achan (Josh 7:19-21) – an example of confession

Is God expecting sinless perfection? (1 John 3:1-3)

What is God expecting?

God is expecting surrender for victory (trust, belief)

God is expecting growth – in becoming like Christ

God is expecting a relationship

Salvation is a matter of union, but our fellowship/relationship is a matter of communion

Sin breaks the communion, not the union

Reflect using David’s Psalms: Psa 130:3, 4; 86:2-5; 32:5, 6
